"Isn't there supposed to be some sort of quality control for professorships?" you ask. "This Gresher sounds like he left all his braincells at home."
"You need to get a certain amount of publications in accredited journals to get the full professorship, but getting onto the tenure track is a test of one's commitment to defending the truth. One needs to defeat an existing professor in a swordfight."
Your interest is immediately piqued. "Oh?"
"Gresher's very good at swordfighting, unfortunately," the engineer sighs. "I tried fighting him with the ceremonial sword, but lost. I don't suppose you'd be any good at swordfighting? The group hasn't really had a professor who's made an impact in the past few decades, but Gresher's just going to get us shut down."
"I am very good at swordfighting," you purr, entirely deservedly.
The man beams with hope. "Will you fight Gresher?"
A good fight sounds appealing, especially if it improves the average intelligence of the galaxy. It might even lure Kenobi over. On the other hand, Kenobi might leave while you're otherwise engaged. Do you go fight Gresher or return to your quest to find Kenobi?
